IHHAAC MISSION

IHHAAC is a federation of civic, citizen, homeowner and neighborhood associations, and of civic activists located throughout Councilmanic Districts 8 and 9, known locally as South County. We provide information and facilitate networking among civic groups, community activists and individuals concerned about the future of the county in general and of south county in particular, especially about those issues which affect our quality of life and property values.

IHHAAC is proactive in monitoring and testifying on: proposed state and local legislation; land use planning, including proposed text amendments to the Master Plan, Sectional Map Amendments, the Transportation Master Plan and the Landscape Manual; and applications before the Planning Board, subdivision review, Zoning Hearing Examiner and Board of License Commissioners (includes control of liquor licenses). Periodic email “Action Alerts”, “Information Alerts”, “Crime Alerts” and special publications keep our members apprised of important issues.

FOR IHHAAC MEMBERS & FRIENDS

The IHHAAC Board of Directors in recent months sent a questionnaire to all candidates who had filed for Councilmanic Districts 8 and 9, asking them to respond in writing; only one candidate did not accept the invitation. This was in preparation for one-hour interviews to weigh the qualifications of each candidate by panels of civic leaders and activists.

The District 9 panel completed its work on March 6. The members voted unanimously to endorse Mel Franklin of Upper Marlboro for election to the Prince George’s County Council representing District 9. The panel concluded that Mr. Franklin’s qualifications are "head and shoulders" above the other candidates for District 9. His biography, a brief statement of his views, and his responses to the questionnaire are attached for your information. The District 8 panel completed its interviews on March 27. The members decided that they need additional information before drawing any conclusions about the best qualified candidate(s). Accordingly, the Panel agreed to observe the candidates’ campaigns for a minimum of 60-days, after which it will reconvene for further discussion of the merits of the District 8 candidates.

The question of an eventual endorsement has been left open. IHHAAC is a federation of south county civic, citizen and neighborhood associations located in Councilmanic Districts 8 & 9. In coming months IHHAAC will convene panels of civic leaders and activists to evaluate the qualifications of candidates for County Executive and for State’s Attorney. Those candidates will be invited to respond to a series of questions concerning their personal and professional qualifications and about their views and positions on issues important to the citizenry. Each candidate also will be invited to participate in extensive interviews regarding their candidacies.
